Write a narrative poem about one of your favorite vacations.
It was a family gathering in the country of my birth.
My father, mother and sisters, and a family friend journeyed to the sun-soaked isle
where English is spoken with an extra flair.
Where dark-skinned countrymen with their bright smiles greeted us.
The blue sea, blue like the snowcone so deep it didn’t seem real.
We traveled where the roads twisted and turned up the mountain pass.
Next stop was pepper shrimp seasoned to perfection; hot and spicy.
The eating never seemed to stop.
The conversation focused on past times and family history.
We saw parts of the island I had never visited before.
We traveled to places where skin turned red, golden brown, caramel, and deep like molasses, all very sweet.
We heard stories of young lovers taking a leap to secure their own fate instead of having it belong to another.
These memories I hold in my heart and mind know that one day that they will also one day become part of my family’s
