Wow! There is so much going on here in the United States I bet it’s stirring up a lot of feelings. As artists, these difficult times only gives us more to say. With all these protests I was wondering… what do you think is worth fighting for?

I’m not going to bring up politics here but there is something to say no matter what “side” you are on. Think about what you’d fight for. Don’t hold back. Just let your feelings flow.

Write a poem about what you believe is worth fighting for.

Write a story about this place. If you think about there are some really great stories that take place in the desert. Dune, Mad Max, and Holes all take place in the desert. In Holes that desert is the setting for a boy’s detention center. In The Maze Runner, the desert is the escape route for our beloved character who are escaping Wicked, the sadistic corporation that experiments on children.

It’s your story. Come on and tell it.

I was the only one to survive. I am sure of it. I saw the boat go under it’s fingers trying to grab me as I swam away. It was dark. So dark that I couldn’t see where I was going. I just let the tide carry me, hoping it would carry me to land. My life jacket helped keep me afloat but I knew that it wouldn’t help me fight any sharks that I might encounter.

When I woke up and saw a deep blue sky and a bird. A beautiful bird.

When I was a teenager I had a subscription to Life magazine. I loved looked at the photographs of people and places from all over the world. It’s amazing how differently people live. Even here in the US people can have really different experiences. Think about living in Alaska where in the winter you’d have 6 months of darkness. What if you lived in a beach community in California or the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona?

Go to http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ and click on the photographs tab. There are several categories. People and Culture, and Travel are the ones I want you to focus on. Select one and write a story based on that picture. Be creative and have some fun!

The pay will help me get through the summer but I am isolated. Alone. And now I need to just do something.

For some reason I never liked the land. The water always called to me. If my family ever moved somewhere I would seek out the nearest body of water. It didn’t matter if it was a lake or the ocean. I needed to be near it. Touch it. Smell it. Taste it.

Finish the story. Who is this character and what’s up with the obsession with water?

Write a story about a countdown. What are you counting down to? Is it a countdown to the last day of school? Maybe it’s a countdown to when an alien ship will reach the earth or maybe a countdown to when the mysterious virus has affected everyone around you will get you too. Maybe this countdown forces you to fight and find a cure.

The “ticking clock” in stories helps to add tension. Think about Trish in Divergent. She only had a limited amount of time to succeed and if she failed she would be factionless. The novel Life as We Knew it also had a countdown as an asteroid traveling towards the moon would cause devastation on the Earth.
